National Anthem Project:
On Wednesday, September 14, the country will celebrate the anniversary of
the “Star Spangled Banner”. Our National Anthem was written in 1814,
words by Francis Scott Key and the music composed by John Stafford Smith.
On the 14th, school music programs across the country will celebrate this
occasion by singing or playing the “Star Spangled Banner”. We plan to
participate with members of the chorus and band at around 12:45 pm
Some facts you may find interesting:
1. The National Anthem Project is being led by the Music Educators
National Conference, the National Association of Music Education. First
Lady Laura Bush is chairing this effort and corporations like Jeep are
helping to fund the project.
2. Two out of three Americans don’t know the words to the anthem, which
has been linked to nationwide cutbacks in school music programs. Parents
teach their kids nursery songs like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star – not the
Star Spangled Banner. Students generally learn songs about our country’s
heritage at school.
3. Of those that claim to know all the words, only 39 percent know what
follows “whose broad stripes and bright stars”. Of those who answered
correctly, 58 percent had received at least five years of music in school
while growing up.
4. One in three (38%) don’t know the official name of the National Anthem
(Star Spangled Banner).
5. Less than 35 percent of American teens can name the author of the
National Anthem (Francis Scott Key).
6. As few as 15 percent of American youth can sing the words to the anthem
from memory.
