J. P. Taravella High School and the Broward County Schools are proud to announce that the J. P. Taravella High School Marching Band has been selected to perform in the 56th Presidential Inaugural Parade on January 20, 2009.  The parade is held following the Presidential swearing-in ceremony and will take place along Pennsylvania Avenue between the U.S. Capitol Building and the White House.  The Marching Trojan Band is led by director Neil Jenkins and assistant director Cheldon Williams.  The nearly 200 member band is the only high school band chosen from the state of Florida as well as the Florida A&M University Marching Band and was selected from among nearly 1,400 applications, according to a statement issued from the Armed Forces Inaugural Committee and the Presidential Inaugural Committee.

The Taravella Band has a history of outstanding performances and Superior ratings at local, state, national and international events.  Consistent Superior ratings at Florida Bandmaster Marching Band Evaluations and Concert Band Evaluations are not unusual for the Taravella Band program.  Placing students in various state Honor Bands, local All County Honor Bands and Orchestras, and the Florida All State Band & Orchestra are common practice.  The band has many accolades and most recently performed in the 2005 London New Year’s Day Parade and the 2008 American Bands in Rome festivities this past December and January, which included a performance in front of the Roman Coliseum on January 1, 2008.

The J. P. Taravella Marching Band is now faced with the task of raising nearly $150,000.00 to transport the band members, accompanying adults, and musical instruments from Sousaphones and Percussion equipment to the many Saxophones, Trumpets, and Trombones necessary to perform in the Inaugural Parade.  The band members will see the sights of Washington DC from Capitol Hill, the Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, and the Smithsonian Institute Museums to Mount Vernon, the Jefferson Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery to mention a few.

Sponsorship levels are shown below.  If you can assist the JPT Band with its effort to raise the necessary funds to get the band to Washington DC, please fill out the accompanying Sponsorship Form.  For further information, contact Neil Jenkins at 754-322-2359 or email at neil.jenkins@browardschools.com.

Sincerely,

Neil Jenkins

Cheldon Williams
